Two exams: General and State

Provider: Pearson VUE, for the Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE). Outlines in force: State outline effective January 1, 2026; General outline effective April 1, 2025.

General

General exam: 80 scored + 5 pretest, 150 minutes. It is Pearson VUE’s national salesperson outline, and each area is explained once on this site’s national pages: property ownership (13), land use (3), transfer of title (6), valuation (11), contracts (9), agency (10), practice (7), disclosures (9), financing (5) and math (7).

State

State exam: 60 scored + 5 pretest, 90 minutes. Its 11 areas run from the regulatory framework (5 items) to foreclosure, short sale and deed in lieu (3). This site groups them into four practice pages: license law (10), agency and duties (18), contracts and escrow (13) and property and foreclosure (19).

Passing score

75% correct on each exam (a percent score, not scaled). The handbook defines the score as the percentage of scored questions you answer correctly, on a 0–100% scale; the unmarked pretest questions (5 per exam) do not count. Your score report shows a percentage per content area, and the handbook warns against adding or averaging those to rebuild an overall score, because the areas differ in size.

The same bar, in questions:

Booking and test day

  • Booking: online or by phone at least 24 hours ahead, paid when you book; no walk-ins. Book on Pearson VUE’s Arizona page.
  • Changes: change or cancel at least 48 hours before the exam; later, the whole fee is forfeited.
  • Where: Chandler, Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma, with more sites on Pearson VUE’s Arizona page.
  • What to bring: two current signature IDs, the primary one a government-issued photo ID, plus your prelicense course certificate. Also: the name must match your registration exactly, and Pearson VUE allows no grace period for an expired ID.
  • Calculator: own silent, hand-held, non-printing calculator without an A–Z keypad allowed. The handbook’s list of accepted models includes the HP 10B and HP 12C.
  • Math: memorize 43,560 sq ft per acre and 5,280 ft per mile; a proration question states 360 or 365 days and who owns the closing day.

If you fail: retakes and exam playback

Retake: wait 24 hours, then book with Pearson VUE (not at the test center); each retake costs the same as the first attempt.

One exam or both: General and State are booked, paid and scored as separate exams, so the natural reading is that you retake only the one you failed. The catch: the handbook does not say in words that a passed exam carries over; its retake page still calls the salesperson exam “a single exam”. Ask Pearson VUE to confirm before you rebook.

Exam playback. After a second or later fail: a one-time 30-minute review of wrong answers, booked within 14 days. It shows the questions you answered incorrectly and has to happen before your next attempt.

Results and the one-year window

Score report: at the test site; a pass includes the license application link, a fail the diagnostics by area.

Validity: the exam must be passed within 1 year before the license application. Plan the Arizona contract-writing course and the application so both land inside that year: how to get licensed.

Licensed in another state

Out-of-state license recognition: State exam only (60 + 5, 90 minutes, $60). Out-of-state recognition requires Arizona residency and may waive the 90-hour course. How states treat each other’s licenses: license reciprocity.
